An Experiment Gone Right… I Think?

We weren’t really sure what we were going to do for our Thanksgiving Day broadcast, at least not until someone asked, and then we were more or less locked into doing something.

“It’ll be easy” I said, “we’ll just play Thanksgiving music for a few hours and eventually people will get tired of it.”

“Name me one Thanksgiving song” said Sabrina Miller.

“Uhhh. Good point” I replied.

So we improvised. For six hours, from 8:00am to 2:00pm on Thanksgiving Day, we turned PDX.FM into a proper music/talk radio station (ewww!) just to see what would happen. Instead of playing a series of short live shows with myriad of hosts and topics, we stayed on for six continuous hours to see if people would actually stick around and listen to us.

And they did.

And they got to hear how Sabrina has nearly no knowledge of modern music, how I can’t stand Dave Grohl or his godforsaken Foo Fighters, how U2 sucks at covering the Ramones, and how underplayed local music really is on regular old fashion radio – and how good so much of it really is.

We had a running bet that we could go about our holiday sometime around 10am because people would eventually quit listening to us yuck it up and feebly attempt to be “DJ’s”, but by 10am we still hadn’t even peaked in listenership, that didn’t happen until 2pm when we decided to give it a rest. Once the dust settled we figured out that we had played 40% local music and talked 20% of the time and received nothing but great responses in the nifty IM chat window.

People interacted, requested songs, and sent a ton of emails telling us that they’d love to hear us do this every day after our regular show.

But don’t you call that “radio”? Isn’t “radio” a dirty word?

Now I’m really confused.
