If I Had A Podcast…

podcasts-lgOut of nowhere I’ve been getting a flood of emails from people out there producing podcasts requesting that I give them a listen. The surprising thing is how many of them aren’t even from Portland. For the most part a lot of them are actually pretty good and it’s been fun talking to people about their work. Now, why are they asking me of all people to review their stuff? I have no idea. I’m hardly the Spielberg of podcasting, in fact I think of myself more as the Brett Ratner – you know when you go in that it won’t be the best thing you’ve ever heard and you’ll feel guilty the entire time, but you’ll listen to it anyway. That said, an equal number of people have begun asking what my personal favorite podcasts are so I thought I’d put together a list of the shows I listen to regularly. What the hell right? America loves a good list. So, in no particular order…

  • Cort and Fatboy – KUFO’s top talent without all of the annoyances of listening to the radio. A lot of podcasts rely on guests because the hosts themselves have suck ass personalities – these guys are the opposite, most of the time they can make their worst guests pull off their best shows.
  • Uncle Weed – It’s not just a podcast, it’s a fucking experience. No words that I could come up with will do this thing justice, it just defies description. Listen for yourself, it’s unlike just about everything else out there and makes me jealous every single time I hear it – in a good way.
  • Geek in the City – Nerd Kings Extraordinaire. Bow down and shut up, chances are they know way more about most things than you do and you’ll bust a nut listening to them talk about it.
  • Sixty Seven Music Celtic Broadcast – ok, I’m cheating a little bit here because I engineer this one each week but I’d listen to it even if I didn’t. Host SkOt Cranmore is one of those people that I actually look forward to seeing every week because he has all of the enthusiasm of any 30 podcast hosts when he walks through the door. Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention, I never gave a crap about Celtic music before this show came to be and now I’m pretty much hooked – so much so that I’m also addicted to The Scallywag Show now too but they’re few and far between :(
  • Strange Love Live – OK I confess. I’ve only watched Strange Love Live a few times but I’ve listened to it every week for a long time now and my Fridays aren’t complete without it. It’s like the Merv Griffin Show only 20x more interesting and about 500x better looking – and nary a Gabor sister in sight (always a huge plus).

Nepotism Alert! The following are shows that I’m involved with in some way but I’d listen to them even if I weren’t. Honest, I really would. Don’t believe me? I’m directly involved with another dozen or more beyond these that I wouldn’t make my worst enemy listen to…

  • The Nerd Report and iPhoneSlutz – These days I’m favoring The Nerd Report because they managed to make Dr. Pepper come out my nose. Nonetheless, both are good for a laugh or two (or thirty).
  • The Meat Show – Completely random fucking radio. I’d say “it’s a breath of fresh air” but that’s a really, really lame way to describe something.
  • NuPoppa, HipDaddie, Dadcentric, The Dad Show, Doug Zanger and Friends – Whatever they decide to call it next week, it’s funny and I’m not even a dad… Plus it has Ted from The Buzz’s Daria and Mitch Show (which I confess, I’ve never listened to). Ted is funny in a quiet and wicked sort of way. I heart Ted.
  • Hike Yeah“Hey Folks, This is Alex…” – I went into REI today for the first time in 10 years because of Alex. No shit.

There are quite a few more out there that I listen to when they’re available but aren’t put out with nearly as much regularity – The 107 Report for instance, I love it so it’s a bonus when there’s a new episode but, there aren’t many new episodes. There’s probably another half dozen that I listen to even though I’m not particularly fond of them (just about anything tech related or anything with 5 douchebags talking over a Skype conference connection – i.e., just about anything tech related).

So there you have it, my unadulterated love for my peers in one handy, easy-to-read post.

Check out every last damn one of them.

Cool little review. I think of myself as more of a radio guy that a TV viewer, I only watch sports on TV now days. I have my iTunes dialed in with smart folders for all my Podcasts. I subscribe to an ungodly amount (96). I get all my daily news via podcast feeds, love the fact that I can listen to such things as the NBC Nightly News, Countdown, and the Wall Street Jounal without all the commercials! I’m always looking for new ones to check out. Here are three that I really like that you may not have heard before.

PRI: The Sound of Young America (a very cool interview show)
The Moth Podcast (people get on stage and tell a true story, crazy stuff)
CommandN (a cool tech video podacst from Toronto)

I have been listening to Meat Show after your show for the past week and its really funny. Really fast and really odd but really funny any way. I heard it before a couple of times but didn’t like that guy that was on it and it always felt like it could be more edgy and cool. And who doesn’t like Carolla?

Big thanks for your kind words. I truly enjpy crafting each podcast and sending my missives out to the people. I have a closet full of stories yet to tell from tavels to 22+ countries and dozens of odd-jobs and strange encounters.

I’m due up for a trip to Portland – i used to make it down often when i lived in Olympia but my fave memory is screening my film HempenRoad back in 1997 as a benefit for OCTA and partying down the rest of the night …

When i make it down on the train next, i hope you’ll join me for a pint and a hoot.

I’ve just fired up a new mini-series called “Rainforest Dispatches” recorded on the west coast of Vancouver Island in 2006 reflecting back on some logging protest blockades in 1993 – 4 chapters of the 9 (plus an introduction) are available now with the rest rolling out fairly rapidly. The next one features essays by native-Oregonian, poet-hero Gary Snyder.

If you have got through the whole Choogle On back catalog, consider exploring my spoken word literature show called Postcards from Gravelly Beach for slightly different but equally tasty flavour.

I also keep a bonus stash of podcasts on the Ephemeral Feasthouse channel with my lectures, presentations and notes which don’t fit anywhere else.

I’ve subscribed to a wide selection of your recommendations and will enjoy getting a wee bit Celtic.

Keep on Chooglin’! and thanks for your support of my renegade arts and crafts.

PS You can find links to that stuff at my gawd-awful yard-sale of a website UncleWeed.net
