You run a blog and podcast entitled “PDX sucks” and you have a problem with an inflammatory headline?
Please do go on.
You read a blog entitled “PDX sucks” and wanted logic?
No. You don’t get to throw stones at a friend of mine and then run away with your hands in the air yelling, “What? I’m an asshole…what did you expect?”
There are always consequences whether you provide a disclaimer or not.
Fair enough.
There are those of us in Portland who very much welcome the opportunity to enjoy MLS level soccer simply because we are fans the sport. Some of us couldn’t care less how the team is acquired and funded, some of us would rather see it done responsibly and with minimal impact on the citizens of Portland – I try very hard to count myself among the latter but am the first to admit that sometimes my desires on that end can get the best of me.
On the opposite side of that argument, there would appear to be a certain number of people that are not only indifferent to the idea of an MLS team, they’ll go out of their way to smear the very notion. Understood. Maybe you don’t like sports, whatever – personally I’m not a big sports fan myself so I get that. Better to have educated kids and prisoners locked up in prisons where they belong than to have a soccer team. No argument there. What I don’t particularly care for however is the notion that anyone on this side of the “MLS fence” is wrong, at any cost.
Mr. Davis’s article insinuated (and judging by the comments after it I wasn’t the only one that felt this way) more or less that “MLS Soccer = Rapists”. That simply isn’t true. I’ve kept quiet in regard to several open statements that Matt Davis has made about soccer, for the simple reason that, in those instances, he has presented a viable and thoughtful alternate viewpoint on the matter. This, in my opinion, simply wasn’t thoughtful.
I’m bothered by this all the more simply because The Mercury is pretty much the only print/blog source I have left for credible and insightful news in this city. I welcome everyone there to an opinion, popular or not, however it reduces my interest as a reader when one of those opinions reaches that far to be self-serving. I already get it, Matt isn’t into the MLS thing. Cool. Good for him. I also get that Matt has presented some insightful reasons WHY he isn’t into the MLS deal. Even better because perhaps it will coax everyone involved into thinking twice about how to accomplish these goals with as little negative impact on the community as possible – after all, the last thing ANY soccer fan around here wants (hopefully) is for the whole deal to build a resentment that kills whatever benefits are to be had. Having said all that, I don’t understand the effort to equate the alleged rape of a woman with being “another side effect of big soccer”.
Bottom line, I’m simply someone who has been reading Matt’s material for quite awhile now and I’m beyond bothered that he made this connection and saw fit to write about it. I’ve disagreed with him about a great many things – so what? As for consequences? I’m failing to see why he would even give the first shit about what I had to say about it at all unless his readership is a lot less than I hope it is.

So what do you expect people to call Davis when he says having MLS soccer means rapists will be running around Portland? Seriously? Davis can fuck right off and he completely took himself out of the equation of having anything valid to say about MLS when he wrote that piece. Fact is Davis gets to post his “musings” about whatever he wants on a widely read blog and in a widely distributed newspaper. It’s ok for him to say all soccer players are rapists but when Robert calls him a dickweed for it he gets to cry about it? It’s fine if he wants to use his bully pulpit to try and publically destroy any good will towards MLS to Portland, but he’s going to have to deal with some form of backlash from people who know that his asinine story insinuating soccer players are all rapists. Watch…now he’s going to write a story about how all soccer fans are violent because a Sounder douche was a drunken asshat in Portland last week.
Why are you even defending him? You’re smarter than that. You should be telling him he’s a stupid fuck for writing that post.
I’m not upset about anyone taking offense to Matt’s post. He can be offensive. He knows that. He’s a sophist and he loves to get people riled up:sometimes it’s the only way to get people in this town talking.

Robert…disappointed you are redacting, you were COMPLETELY on point…and if a douche wants to post his opinion, you have every right to call into question that opinion. Davis opposes all public financing, except for those involving his wife (way not to have a double standard) and frankly has been so insane, he’s giving bojack a run at the clueless ranty blogger award of Portland. I don’t disagree that he has the right to an opinion, but too often people treat his garbage as fact, and he does nothing to dispel his illinformed followers. The harm he does in reporting “news” far outweighs any “rights” he is suppose to have as a “news reporter”, and should be called into question when he steps over the line (which was clear in this case). Unless they want to change his title and responsibilities, its unfair for Davis to pretend to be a journalist in one article, then change it in another then hide behind “its just an op-ed”.

Note to Chuck. Don’t know who the Fuck Kiala and her bow wow crowned Dane are, so how would I know if soccer is their sport. I have seen on the twitter feeds that Kiala is big on da Tweetie with a major soccer crazie who goes by Garrett (blackedout). Couple weeks back or more those two liked the twitter connection a bit, so whose to say what connects them if it’s not soccer.
