So I’ve had a bunch of emails over the past few weeks about the announcement we made on the 1st of May that we were joining the Small Plate Radio Network. Apparently the announcement itself confused a lot of people and had several people scurrying on over to the sprnetwork.com website to find us, only to realize that we never really stuck the Portland Sucks Live show over there at all. We’ve heard a full range of comments about their content, some good and some bad and some just plain befuddled (for lack of a better word) – most of it though has just been a simple “what the fuck? I don’t get it” affair.
So here’s the skinny… I dig what the folks at the Small Plate Radio Network are doing on some levels, I really do. I think streaming radio is quickly surpassing terrestrial radio as a viable form of information and entertainment. They have a lot of great shows over there and I’m all about spreading the love among our young industry. Frankly though, I feel that the Portland Sucks Live show fits in with their lineup like Jan on the Brady Bunch. I just have a very hard time with our fine show here airing before some dry, boring, and just generally fucking uninteresting marketing show. Even worse, can I justify saying 3,000 expletives in 30 minutes just before a show on parenting? Somehow it just doesn’t feel right to me. Sure, they’ve got other explicit shows but a lot of it feels “explicit” by design rather than as a lifestyle choice. What happens if one of their ‘sponsors’ doesn’t like my comments about them? I’ve managed to piss off Best Buy, Albertson’s, and Nike in the past two months alone – am I potentially robbing the Small Plate Network of revenue if I spew about the things that I believe in? Probably.
So, I say screw that. The Small Plate Radio Network crew are largely a very talented group of folks, even if they have a couple of really lame duck shows. The shit they have that’s actually good is fantastic (anything related to food basically). I’ll continue to hock their stuff unofficially but for the time being we’re keeping Portland Sucks as far away from rules and regulations as we possibly can. Why screw it up?

spr network = good idea with mostly crappy boring shows but i like the punk irish music bagpipe hour show what ever its called.
CMAYM,
FYI – I just got off the phone with Skot Cranmore, host of the 67 Music Celtic Broadcast and he’s agreed that the “Punk Irish Music Bagpipe Hour” is a much more suitable name for his show.
People, be nice. Just because I’m an asshead doesn’t mean you have to strive to be one too.
