Today the GLT (Gay & Lesbian Times) out of San Diego, California called for the resignation of Portland Mayor Sam Adams. I know what you’re thinking – WAIT A MINUTE?! Isn’t California that state just to the south of us? WAIT A MINUTE?! Isn’t San Diego the southernmost metro city in that state just to the south of us? WAIT A MINUTE?! Isn’t San Diego, California about a billion hours away from here?
Yes, yes, and yes.
So then is the GLT newspaper making this a gay issue then by having an opinion on it at all? Local area media has made damned sure that there’s to be a 24/7/365 media circus surrounding the private matters of the sexual lives of Portland political figures but now we’re supposed to take seriously the requests for resignation that come from unrelated publications in different states? Last time I checked, nothing that was made into policy in this city had a damn bit of bearing on the lives of those living in San Diego. I can’t recall when I have ever heard that the folks in San Diego were going to help us foot the bill for transportation, crime issues, education, roads, etc. So now why would I give the first shit about what they think about our Mayor?
I’ve heard time and again that Sam Adams has hurt the gay community by doing what he did. I disagree. I’m a white heterosexual male and I feel in no way violated by what Bill Clinton did. By suggesting that Sam Adams has hurt gays or their cause, you’re then giving legs to the theory that gays are perverts. I don’t believe them to be yet they want this to remain a sexual issue, not an issue of lying and deception. Sure, they make the point that lying and deception play a large role in all of this but in the end, why else would THE GAY AND LESBIAN TIMES GIVE A DAMN ABOUT OUR MAYOR? The only common denominator is “GAY”.
Maybe Sam Adams did something bad, maybe he didn’t – that’s for us in Portland to decide and then act on. We all have our opinions on it. If y’all don’t mind though, I’d much rather we were “allowed” to keep our dirty laundry in-house, to be dealt with in-house. Very, very few of us want further influence from California, the well-known MOST PISS BROKE STATE IN THE UNION… We didn’t ask your opinion.
Take a day trip down to Sea World, say hello to “Kasatka” and shut the fuck up.
