The Oregonian/OregonLive.com, The Willamette Week, and a handful of local TV networks can finally rest. Mission accomplished everyone! The Sam Adams “scandal that wasn’t there” has landed in that holy grail, mother of all publications, The New York Times. The Oregonian of course has decided that this is worthy of prominent placement on their web site home page – and in their story they use the choice quote “Nobody at age 17 knows what they are doing, which is why they should never be having sex with middle-aged men, especially those in powerful positions.”
I had stated just last week that The Oregonian has been unfairly using this story to “make it” on the national press stage. Rather than focusing on anything remotely positive about our fine city, they’ve instead chosen to dive head first into a massive smear campaign. Why report on the virtues of an innovative city that leads the nation in green living when you can use sex and lies to get attention? Why report only facts when you can juice it all up with bullshit?
Again, I understand why some are furious with Sam Adams. I am still a strong support of him and his politics and I still don’t give two shits about his personal life. What continues to make my stomach turn is the way the media has handled this story – using it as a means to promote themselves among national media outlets.
I’d love to see Portland gain the national credit and respect it deserves, but not like this.

Please. The Oregonian is not “out to get” Sam Adams by any means. His partner, Peter Zucker, works for them AND they share the same Attorney. I guess anyone who doesn’t support Sam Adams is just trying to further there own agenda, right? Well at least it sounds like Wag is coming our way “I understand why some our furious with Sam Adams.” Thank you Robert that was all the validation I needed.
Sad to hear that all of the validation you need in the world has to come from me, I really don’t want to weigh in with that much importance in your life.
Anyway, I’m not of the belief that The Oregonian is necessarily out to get Sam Adams, if that were the case then they wouldn’t have gushed like spinsters at a wedding when he was voted in. No, I think The Oregonian are simply a pile of opportunistic bastards that print what sells vs. simply printing the news. They’ve made a mountain out of a mole hill here and love to bask in their sad little glory to sell advertising and play “big city gossip”. Make no mistake about it, I think most of us are guilty of that – myself included from time to time, but I’m not professionally reporting the news either.
As for me coming around to your line of thinking – I’m still a supporter of Mayor Adams. I’m not proud of the fact that he lied about his fling with a barely 18-year old man, but I’m not about to crucify him for it either. We’ve all fucked someone and regretted it the next day and most of us have lied about it later. I hold Mayor Adams to a higher standard on political issues and city policy, I still don’t give a damn about his personal life.

I am a member of the media. Good journalism done by WW broke this story. It’s not a question of whether we are invading Adams’ personal life, it’s whether or not he was involved in soliciting a minor: WHICH IS STILL UNKNOWN.
It is unknown by your own admission and because of that its only speculation. It isnt the place of the media to speculate when it comes to these things. Good men and women get hurt by speculation. The media never speculates on much except peoples sex lives, the only things that they cant prove by obtaining documents or doing real journalism. I am a WW reader but I dont see where quoting a lot of anonymous sources and speculating is good journalism.
