Portland: #1 City in America …. in sustainability?

by RobertWagner on September 22, 2008

Just when you thought Portland couldn’t possibly topple Seattle at something, along comes the 2008 SustainLane awards to prove you wrong. Portland is the nation’s #1 green city apparently and we’re simply beaming with pride. Seattle placed a close third (behind San Francisco) and that alone begs the question – how the fuck are they rating these things to begin with?

If you’ve ever been on I-5 in Seattle during rush hour traffic you’ll know what I mean. It’s not uncommon for gas-hogging SUV’s to crawl along the 40+ mile stretch of Seattle metro freeway system ALL GODDAMN DAY. Wow, talk about diminishing our enthusiasm. If Portland is #1 and Seattle is #3 and both cities have godawful traffic congestion and pollution problems – what does this say about the rest of the country?

So Portlanders, before you go around wearing yet another badge of do-gooder pride just consider this: it’s not that you’re really doing a bang up job saving the earth here, it’s that the rest of the country is bashing the planet over the head with a frickin’ baseball bat.
